Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating) are serious brain-based illnesses with the highest death rate of any mental illness.  Research suggests that the longer an individual has an Eating Disorder, the more difficult it may be to recover. For this reason, early intervention and treatment are paramount.  However, full recovery from Anorexia, Bulimia, or Binge Eating can occur at any age, no matter how long an individual has been ill.

Dr. Wicholas strongly believes that each of his clients can discover his or her own path towards recovery, based upon his own clinical experience of helping dozens of clients achieve full recovery from Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating.

Dr. Wicholas began treating youth with Eating Disorders in 2004 at Seattle Children’s Hospital where he received his initial training.  Since then, he has worked as a psychiatrist on academic Eating Disorders services in three countries: USA, Canada, and New Zealand.  Prior to starting his Seattle psychiatry practice in 2012, Dr. Wicholas worked for over three years as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Provincial Eating Disorders Program at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC where he treated children and adolescents with the most severe Eating Disorders in the Province.

At BC Children’s Hospital, Dr. Wicholas was the founding psychiatrist of the Intensive Day Program and helped train therapists in the use of Maudsley Family Based Therapy for adolescent Anorexia.  As a psychiatrist, Dr. Wicholas has extensive training and experience in all aspects of Eating Disorders treatment, including individual and family counseling, medical monitoring, and medications.

Dr. Wicholas lectures widely on the topic of Eating Disorders at professional conferences and other teaching venues.  For more information about his approach to Eating Disorders treatment, please view the below educational videos which includes interviews with some of his former clients.
